The Old Dominion University Monarchs basketball team is among the premier college basketball programs in the State of Virginia. The Monarchs basketball team first started making waves in the national scene in the late 1960’s at the Division II level. In 1971 the team won 4 NCAA Division II Tournament games and advanced to the national championship game. Returning to the national championship in 1975, The Monarchs defeated New Orleans in a 76-74 thriller. Following the 1977 season, ODU moved into Division I and has competed at the highest level of the sport ever since. Since moving to Division I, ODU has won 6 conference regular season championships, and 9 conference tournament championships, spanning 2 conferences. Old Dominion has also made over 10 trips to the NCAA tournament, and numerous other trips to the NIT. Notable former Monarchs basketball players include Dave Twardzik, Joel Copeland, Gray Eubank, Wilson Washington, Leo Anthony, Mark West, Woody Barnes, and Kent Bazemore. The Old Dominion University Monarchs basketball team plays their home games at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Virginia.
