2011-2012 New Mexico Lobos College Basketball Preview:
During the 2010-11 season the New Mexico Lobos men's basketball team finished at 22-12, and they're expected to perform even better this year. The Lobos, who are a part of the Mountain West Conference, have to compete against a series of high-powered teams every year, including the Air Force Falcons, Colorado State Rams and the San Diego State Aztecs.
However, the Lobos have a roster full of shooters who can score from the point this season. A.J. Hardeman, Drew Gordon and Cameron Bairstow are expected to help the team grow as an offense thanks to their ability to dunk as well as make quick drives to the basket.
Defensively, the Lobos are predicted to show signs of improvement from the 2010-11 season as well. Hugh Greenwood, Chad Adams and Kory Alford all bring strength and stamina to the team, which will need it while attempting to oust competitors in such a tough conference. Although the Lobos finished at 22-12 last season, expect the team to attempt to capitalize on the opportunity to make a name for themselves as a true NCAA competitor this season.

The New Mexico Lobos have long been an active basketball program. The Lobos first fielded a program in 1899, though an official coach would not join the program until 1920. In their team history, the Lobos have posted 3 conference tournament championships and 5 conference regular season championships. Under Coach Bob King, the program rose to national prominence. With King at the helm, the Lobos would post consecutive winning seasons, and would capture their first WAC championship in King's second season.
The New Mexico Lobos play their home games at The Pit, less commonly referred to as University Arena. The Pit was finished in 1966, and has earned the reputation as one of the most hostile venues for an opposing team. The dark lighting and raucous student crowds often drown the opposing team and their fans. Come see a game at The Pit and be a part of the absolute craziness that is Lobos basketball.
