The Wyoming Cowboys basketball program began in 1904, and rose to prominence in the 1930's under coach Willard "Dutch" Witte. In 1943, the team captured their first NCAA Tournament title, defeating Georgetown. The Cowboys would struggle for wins throughout the 1950's and 1960's, but would make an NCAA Tourney appearance again in 1967. In the 1970's the program would experience a resurgence under coach Jim Brandenburg, never posting a losing season under his 9-year tenure.
The Wyoming Cowboys play their home basketball games at the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie, Wyoming. The 15,028 seat multi-purpose arena opened in 1982, and is home to both the men's and women's basketball teams.
