It wouldn’t be a stretch at all to call North Carolina the #1 college basketball state in the United States. North Carolina State has the unenviable job of sharing the state with two of college basketballs top programs, the Duke Blue Devils and the North Carolina Tar Heels, but the Wolfpack have experienced their share of success nonetheless.
The Wolfpack started playing basketball in 1911 and didn’t make their first NCAA Tournament appearance until 1950, the same season that they made their first Final Four. North Carolina State continued to make the NCAA Tournament regularly and make deep runs until 1974 when the Wolfpack won their first championship by beating Marquette 76-64. The team was coached by Norm Sloan and led by 7-foot-4 senior Tom Burleson. North Carolina State beat the Virginia Cavaliers 81-78 in the 1983 championship game to win another NCAA Tournament. The 1983 championship team was coached by Jim Valvano and had five future-NBA players on the roster.
North Carolina State Wolf Pack Recent NCAA Tourament History
The Wolfpack is currently riding a three season NCAA Tournament streak under head coach Mark Gottfried. The first year was in 2012 when North Carolina State was a #11 seed and upset the #6 seed San Diego State Aztecs and the #3 seed Georgetown Hoyas to make it to the Sweet Sixteen where they lost to the #2 seed Kansas Jayhawks. In 2013, North Carolina State was a #8 seed and had less success, losing to the #9 seed Temple Owls in their first game. In 2014, the Wolfpack had to compete against Xavier in a play-in game to enter the bracket as a #12 seed. North Carolina State won that game 74-59 and lost their next game to the #5 seed St. Louis Billikens by a score of 83-80 in OT.
