2011-2012 USC Trojans College Basketball Preview:
The Trojans 2011-12 ended with a loss to the eventual Final Four-bound VCU Rams. A bigger loss came in the offseason when the team’s leading scorer and rebounder Nikola Vucevic to the NBA and its 2010 top recruit to UNLV. It’s going to be a tough road for head coach Kevin O’Neil, but he feels that his overall the Trojans will make another run at the Final Four in March.
To do so, however, the Trojans will have to also overcome a season-ending injury to senior point guard Jio Fontan, who tore his ACL during the team’s pre-season trip to Brazil. In his stead comes the 5’7 sophomore guard Maurice Jones, last year’s leading scorer who already played 35 minutes per game. As for who he’ll pass to, it will be a work in progress to get the chemistry on the team going, as junior forwards James Blasczyk and Aaron Fuller transfer in from Texas A&M and Iowa, respectively.
It might actually be up to junior college transfer and sophomore center DeWayne Dedmon to make the team his own. The seven-foot behemoth will look to join the 7’1 Blasczyk to make one of the more intimidating frontcourts in all of college basketball.
