Pittsburgh Panthers Basketball Season Preview History

2011-2012 Pittsburgh Panthers College Basketball Preview:
A combination of new talent and the return of outstanding upperclassmen may be the reason the Panthers go deep into the NCAA tournament this year. The squad was absolutely dominant in the Big East in 2010-11, and finished up with a 15-3 conference record. With a top-15 showing in the pre-season, there are big expectations for Pitt in the land of big sandwiches.

One reason for the team's outstanding performance will be senior Ashton Gibbs, a 6' 2" guard who has already been heralded as one of the school’s best players ever. He's led the club in shooting for the past two years, and has hit double digits in scoring in 54 of his last 65 games. He's also a clutch player who can hit the big shot at the buzzer.

Rounding out the team will be power forward Nasir Robinson, an explosive force who helped guide the team to a Big East title last year and will surely put his hard work in the off season on display for the fans. He's known as an aggressive and tough inside player who provides excellent defensive and rebounding skills. With Robinson and Gibbs out on the floor, look for the Panthers to place themselves at the top of the Big East again.

University of Pittsburgh 2010 Men’s Basketball Preview:
A stone panther stands proudly at the entrance of what locals and students call “The Pete,” the basketball stadium where the Pitt Panthers play. While a nod to the team mascot, it may also double as a warning to first-time visitors who have never seen the Oakland Zoo student cheering section in riotous action. Are you brave enough to venture into what is widely-regarded as the toughest place to play in the Big East thanks to these gold-clad denizens of The Pete’s lower-level? Then check out the seats TicketCity has for you to see the University of Pittsburgh Panthers attempt to maul the competition.

Even though coach Jamie Dixon and his squad begin the season ranked in the top-5 for the third time in the last five years, the expectations this year are somehow greater. Last year, they came off a 31-win season and an Elite Eight berth, but were still picked to finish ninth in the Big East. The result was a 25-win season and a number three seed in the NCAA Tournament. This year, they only lost one starter and players like guard Ashton Gibbs and forward Gilbert Brown are looking to build upon their breakout seasons and make the team a more cohesive unit. That way, the entire nation can hear the growl of the eleven Panthers making another attack on the post-season.
