Alabama Crimson Tide 2011-12 Men’s College Basketball Preview
Alabama is looking to return to its glory days of basketball, and it look like it might be near. Last year’s team made it to the NIT championship, which it ultimately lost to Wichita State. While head coach Anthony Grant lost some of the senior leadership from that squad, he kept the core of the unit (and the top-three scorers) and brought in fantastic recruits for a possible NCAA run.
Of the three top scorers from last year, the only senior is All-SEC forward/center JaMychal Green, a defensive machine that, while undersized at 6’8, has become one of the elite rebounders and defenders in the SEC. Junior forward Tony Mitchell joins Green in the front court, and has the same length as Green but better offensively with a healthy 15.2 points per game last season. Sophomore point guard Trevor Releford will look to up his share even more this year, even after a great freshman year that saw his tally 11 points a game and 125 assists.
What Alabama looks to put them over hump, and into the Tourney, is their 13th-ranked recruiting class. Shooting guard Trevor Lacey and small forward Levi Randolph will start for the Tide, and if their previous successes follow them into school, not only will Alabama make it to the NCAA tournament—they will be a threat to make a big run.
