Success for Alabama in basketball has been highlighted by the leadership of three coaches. First C.M. Newton took the reins in 1968 and led the Crimson Tide to three straight SEC titles, four NIT appearances, and 2 NCAA tournament appearances. Wimp Sanderson coached the Tide from 1981 until 1992. He would lead Alabama to 5 Sweet Sixteen appearances in the NCAA tourney.
