Georgia Bulldogs 2011-12 Men’s College Basketball Preview
There is a sense of optimism around Athens around head coach Mark Fox’s squad, even though they lost power forward Trey Thompkins and shooting guard Travis Leslie to the NBA last season. That’s because there’s still a high level of leadership on the squad in its most important section: the backcourt.
Seniors point guard Gerald Robinson and shooting guard Dustin Ware will lead a team of new faces and raw talent. Fox’s offseason coup was landing McDonalds All-American power forward Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, a gifted shooter who can score from anywhere on the floor. If Georgia is to go anywhere this season, they will need Caldwell-Pope and sophomore forward Marcus Thorton to have great years manning the front court. Thorton, who was Georgia’s Mr. Basketball coming out of high school, had a lackluster freshman year, and the team is now looking for him to match the promise he showed coming to Georgia two years ago.

Georgia’s greatest success came in 1983 when the Bulldogs made it to the NCAA Final Four. Ironically the team managed this feat only after Dominique Wilkins opted to go into the NBA rather than play his senior year. So although Wilkins is widely considered the best player in Georgia history, he never managed an NCAA Tournament appearance.
