Kentucky Wildcats 2011-12 Men’s College Basketball Preview
John Calipari might not have been in paradise during his summer vacation in Puerto Rico, where he was coaching the national team for the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship. However, he was serving a dual purpose, planting a recruiting flag in the country and trying out some new material for the high flying recruits he has coming in, including another high-flying point guard in the mold of past highly drafted and recruited Wildcats like John Wall, Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans—Marqis Teague.
Calipari had an in with the Indianapolis-born Teague—his dad played for him at Boston College, so it was a match made in basketball heaven. Along with another point guard wonder, Calipari brought in three other five-star recruits in forwards Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Kyle Wiltjer. ESPN has already dubbed the incoming class of freshman the next Fab Five (minus one), all of whom ranked in the top-25 on the Rivals 150.
If that weren’t enough, Coach Cal still has sure-fire NBA players who didn’t decide to go to the draft last June like sophomores forward Terrence Jones and guard Doron Lamb and senior guard Daruis Miller. It might be scary for the rest of the NCAA, but this might be the most stacked team Calipari has ever put together, and an overwhelming bet to win it all.
