The LSU Tigers basketball program was founded in 1909. The LSU Tigers first played in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association and then the Southern Conference before joining the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in 1933. In 1935, the LSU Tigers would win what’s considered to be their one and only national title so far under Coach Harry Rabenhorst. There was no tournament then, so championships have been awarded based on polls at the time. The LSU Tigers would also win 3 SEC Championships under Rabenhorst. In the late ‘60s, LSU would have the talent of sensational guard Pete Maravich on the court and would make it to the NIT Final Four. Beginning in 1978, LSU began a run that would make them perennial NCAA Tournament participants and give them 5 more SEC titles. Shaquille O’Neal helped contribute to this success from 1989-1992. Other than Maravich and O’Neal, LSU has also been led by prominent players like Tyrus Thomas, Glen Davis, Chris Jackson, and Bob Pettit.
The LSU Tigers play basketball at Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The crowd volume inside is commonly called “the Deaf Dome”.
