South Carolina Gamecocks 2011-12 Men’s College Basketball Preview
Cocks head coach Darrin Horn wanted a tough, defensive-minded team. He got that last year, with one issue—it didn’t score much, leading to a sub.500 record. This year, a bizarre twist involving football and transferring might start the team on a slow note, one that it will have to power through to make any noise in the SEC.
Their dynamo sophomore point guard Bruce Ellington will start the basketball season playing on the gridiron as the all-South Carolina high school phenom decided to play for Steve Spurrier this year. And even though Spurrier has allowed Ellington to play during the month-long hiatus between the end of the season and bowl season, the team will be without him for a good part of the year. In his stead, sophomore guard Eric Smith will handle the ball.
But while Ellington is out, the leadership will have to come from a pair of forwards, senior Malik Cooke and Lakeem Jackson. While on the floor with his whole unit would be ideal of Horn, it will be at the start when his team gels and shows how great they can be.
