The Texas A&M Aggies basketball team has established itself in recent years as a real contender for NCAA Tournament success. Billie Gillespie, the Texas A&M Aggies’ coach until the recent hiring of Mark Turgeon, took A&M to the NIT quarterfinals, the second round of the NCAA Tournament and the Sweet Sixteen in the three seasons he coached. Gillespie’s success helped get him the prestigious head coaching job at the University of Kentucky. The 2006-2007 season was record breaking for Texas A&M, beating Kansas for the first time, and getting a #3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. A game at Reed Arena in College Station, Texas has become a tough challenge for visiting teams.
Texas A&M Aggies basketball history really begins in 1963 when Shelby Metcalf took over the team and immediately brought it to prominence in the Southwest Conference. Metcalf’s teams would win 6 conference titles, 2 conference tournament championships, and take the Texas A&M Aggies to 6 NCAA Tournament appearances and 4 trips to the NIT. Metcalf was famously fired for commenting that Texas A&M’s athletic director wasn’t “all that bright.” Between Metcalf’s firing in 1990 and the arrival of Billy Gillespie in 2004, the Texas A&M Aggies struggled mightily with a poor winning percentage, NCAA recruiting violations, and no trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Texas A&M Aggies play home games at Reed Arena in College Station, Texas. The arena has a capacity of 12,500. With the help of a student group known as the “Reed Rowdies”, Texas A&M has recently managed to make their home court a tough place to play for visiting teams. The Texas A&M Aggies have a bright future competing within the SEC and in future NCAA Tournament play. Buy Texas A&M Aggies basketball tickets and witness a new era of success in College Station!
