Vanderbilt Commodores 2011-12 Men’s College Basketball Preview
Vandy head coach Ken Stallings has run one of the consistently best programs in the SEC over his dozen years. Plenty of 20-plus win seasons and trips to the NCAAs have made him a solid coach, but three one-and-out performances have put him under the microscope in Nashville. Luckily for him, this is one of the more stacked teams Stallings has ever returned to, one that might give him the edge in finally pushing deep into the tournament.
Returning to the Commodores’ starting line-up include five of their eight top scorers from last year, led by SEC Player of the Year candidate, junior shooting guard John Jenkins, and senior forward Jeffrey Taylor, an All-SEC Second Team player last season. Players bubbling up to the surface include senior point guard Brad Tinsley, who successfully transitioned from two-guard to make way for Jenkins, and senior center Festus Ezelim one of the most improved players in the nation last year.
Because of the returning talent, Vandy can’t even put its two star recruits—guards Dai-Jon Parker and Kedren Johnson—on the floor. However, if they can seamlessly work their way into the rotation, then the Commodores might finally break on through past the first round in a big way.
