Texas A&M Aggies NCAA Tourament Tickets Information

The Texas A&M Aggies basketball team has a long and successful history in the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies first started playing basketball in the early 1900’s, and were one of the most dominate teams in the South during the 1920’s. This era pre-dated the NCAA Tournament which did not begin until 1939, and was one of the most successful times for Aggies basketball. Texas A&M made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1951, a year in which the Aggies would finish the season ranked in the top 25 for the first time since the inception of the Coaches Poll.

The most successful era in Texas A&M basketball history came after the hiring of legendary coach Shelby Metcalf in the early 1960’s. Metcalf quickly turned the Aggies into one of the most prominent teams in the Southwest Conference. Behind coach Metcalf’s leadership, Texas A&M returned to the NCAA Tournament in 1964. Texas A&M made another appearance in the Big Dance 5 years later in 1969, a year that would turn out to be the Aggies longest run in the tournament to date. Texas A&M would defeat Trinity in route to their first ever appearance in the Sweet Sixteen. Metcalf’s legend would continue to grow, taking the Aggies back to the NCAA Tournament again in 1975, and 1980. 1980 would see Texas A&M win 2 games in the tournament for the first time, upsetting favored North Carolina in the second round to advance to another Sweet Sixteen.

Following Metcalf’s departure from College Station, the Aggies would not return to the NCAA Tournament for almost 20 years. In the early 2000’s, Texas A&M brought in Billy Gillespie to lead the Aggies basketball program and he quickly returned the Aggies to prominence. Under Gillespie the Aggies would return to the NCAA Tournament in 2006, the first of 6 straight appearances in the tournament. In 2007, Texas A&M were one of the nation’s teams, earning a top 10 ranking at one point in the season. The 2007 Texas A&M Aggies basketball team received a #3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and behind the stellar play of Aggie legend Acie Law IV, Texas A&M would defeat Penn and Louisville in-route to the school’s third ever Sweet Sixteen appearance. The Aggies took on the Memphis Tigers, losing a 1 point thriller, in a game that would end up being one of the best of the season.
