WAKE FOREST FOOTBALL SEASON PREVIEW:
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons have been a consistent fixture in the national rankings each year, but the 2011 season was a bit underwhelming by the fan base's standards. After a shocking loss to Syracuse in the opener, Wake Forest rattled off four straight victories and knocked off Florida State before hitting an even tougher portion of their schedule. The Demon Deacons were unable to overcome matchups against Notre Dame, Clemson and Vanderbilt and were forced to settle for third place in the Atlantic Coast Conferences' (ACC) Atlantic division. While Wake Forest's offense looks like a work-in-progress, its defense will continue to be a strong point for the Demon Deacons.
With the emergence of quarterback Tanner Price during the 2011 season, he is expected to start this year and threw an impressive 20 touchdowns and only six interceptions. At running back, junior Josh Harris will step into the starter's role and will team with Tommy Bohanon in the backfield. The receiver and tight end positions are major question marks heading into 2012, with Terence Davis and Mike Campanaro returning and Spencer Bishop and Neil Basford contending for the tight end position. While Steven Chase and Garrick Williams will return at the tackle and center positions, many positions are still up for grabs and the players will have to gel quickly to succeed in 2012.
Defensively, Wake Forest uses both a 3-4 and 4-3 looks, and Zach Thompson and Nikita Whitlock have emerged as steady starters on the defensive line. The linebacking corps is easily the strength of the team, with three stellar starters in Joey Ehrmann, Scott Betros, Riley Haynes and many promising depth players. In the secondary, Merrill Noel and Kenny Okoro will return to start at cornerback, while the strong and free safety positions should see significant competition from a group of talented underclassmen.
Heading into the 2012 season, Wake Forest has a serious shot at the ACC Championship and will have to jump into the meat of their schedule early with premier matchups against Florida State, North Carolina and Virginia. The Demon Deacons will also take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for the first time in years, which will be a crucial November game for both teams.
The team's emerging offense and experienced defense has fans excited about the squad's potential to reach a BCS bowl and make some noise in the national rankings.
