The Big 12 Conference consists of 12 schools located in the central United States, and is home to some of the most successful teams in college football. To name a few, the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers, the University of Oklahoma Sooners, the Kansas State University Wildcats, the University of Colorado Buffaloes, and the University of Texas Longhorns step on the field each year to vie for the title of Big 12 Conference champion.
The Big 12 Conference is a member of NCAA Division I for all sports, and all its football teams compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), formerly Division I-A. Because the FBS is the highest level of NCAA Division I competition, this means these schools are the top pigskin competitors at the inter-collegiate level.
The Big 12 Conference was formed in 1994 as a result of the former Big Eight Conference consolidating with four Texas schools that were released from the disbanded Southwest Conference. Since its inception, the Big 12 Conference leads all conferences with five appearances in Bowl Championship Series title games. Over the past four seasons alone, schools in the conference have come off the field with 12 NCAA trophies in an array of sports, and have clenched 11 national crowns in 12 years.
