The Texas Longhorns have appeared in two of the four BCS bowl games since the BCS began in 1998. The Longhorns appeared in the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State in 2009 and the Rose Bowl in 2005 and 2006. Texas’ first visit to the Rose Bowl saw the Horns win in a dramatic victory over the Michigan Wolverines; a Dusty Mangum field goal as time expired was the difference in that instant classic. The following year Mack Brown returned to the Rose Bowl to play in the BCS National Championship Game against the #1 ranked USC Trojans. The Longhorns were led by quarterback Vince Young to a miraculous victory over the Trojans, 41-38.
The Longhorns won their first national title in football in 1963, then won two more times in 1969 and 1970. The victory in the BCS Championship Game in January 2006 earned UT their 4th National Championship in college football. The Longhorns four national titles trail only a few programs in total (recognized) national championships, including: Notre Dame, Alabama, USC, Michigan, Oklahoma, Miami, Nebraska and Ohio State.
UT Head Coach Mack Brown has built his program into one that competes every year for a spot in the BCS Championship Game. Texas’ head coach in waiting, Will Muschamp, will look to keep that tradition going for the Horns whenever he takes over the program. The Longhorns always face a tough conference schedule in the Big 12, which includes their big game in Dallas against the Oklahoma Sooners. If Texas runs the table in the Big 12 they are definitely playing in a BCS Bowl Game and likely to be playing in the BCS National Championship Game.
