Rutgers is one of the first two teams to begin playing intercollegiate football in 1869. The other team was Princeton, and the two teams would split the two games they played that year. Historically speaking, Rutgers and Princeton are considered co-national champions that year, even though no other teams played and they played only two games! In the 1950's and early '60s, Rutgers would win three conference titles in the Middle Atlantic Conference. The Scarlet Knights will look to build on their recent success and make football at the highest level a permanent fixture at the school.
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights play their home games at High Point Solutions Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey. High Point Solutions Stadium, originally Rutgers Stadium, has developed a reputation for being a disproportionately loud venue and a scary place for visiting teams to play. The stadium expanded in 2009 to hold 56.545 fans.
