TEMPLE OWLS SEASON PREVIEW:
While the team will soon be transitioning to the Big East Conference in the 2012 season and will deal with a much tougher level of competition, the Owls have made great strides over the past several years and look ready to play with big-time programs.
Unfortunately for the Owls, they will only have three starters returning from their dynamic 2011 offense, but Addazio's system is predicated on versatility, so the Owls may be able to scheme themselves out of potential mismatches. The offense will be lead by quarterback Chris Coyer, who was the Owls' primary throwing quarterback. The running back group will have huge shoes to fill with the departure of Bernard Pierce, but the shifty Matt Brown and power back Kenny Harper should form a nice tandem in the backfield. The offensive line will receive a few new starters, but the real work in progress is the wide receiver corps. With only one receiver who caught more than three passes in 2011 (Deon Miller), the group will need to get up to speed quickly to contend in the Big East.
On defense, the Owls will return five starters, but the real question mark is the defensive line. Kamal Johnson and Kadeem Curtis could provide a steadying presence at the tackle positions, but the team will need to generate a pass rush with two underclassmen ends. Ahkeem Smith and Blaze Caponegro are expected to be the leaders of the linebacking corps, while the secondary will benefit from the return of strong safety Justin Gildea. Along with an exciting trio of cornerbacks and the talented true freshman Nate Smith at safety, the secondary should be the strength of the Owls' defense.
With increasing success comes a much harder schedule, and Temple will have a tall order heading into the 2012 season. Along with their new and improved Big East opponents, the Owls will have two tough matchups in September when they face off against Penn State and Maryland. While the Owls may experience a few growing pains, they have showed that they belong in the Big East and will make the most of the opportunity to play in the spotlight.
