In recent times, the West Virginia Mountaineers football program has proven itself to be a top 25 contender every year. Playing as an independent for most of its history, the West Virginia Mountaineers play in the Big East today, and have managed to win many conference titles (SEC Conference and Big East). Having had only one chance at a National Championship, in 1988, West Virginia has the best record in college football for a team that hasn't won a national title. A West Virginia Mountaineers game at Mountaineer Field in Morgantown, West Virginia is a college football tradition you'll never forget.
West Virginia Mountaineers plays football in the Big East Conference. The West Virginia Mountaineers have rivalries with Pittsburgh Panthers, playing in the annual “Backyard Brawl”. Additional rivalries include Syracuse Orange (playing for the Swartzwalter Trophy), Marshall (the Governor's Trophy), Maryland, and Louisville. Who can forget the 2006 Sugar Bowl against Georgia? West Virginia running back Steve Slaton rushed for 204 yards breaking Tony Dorsett's Sugar Bowl rushing record. A fourth quarter fake punt sealed the game for the Mountaineers, giving them a 38-35 victory. That game is widely considered one of the biggest upsets in BCS Bowl history. The West Virginia Mountaineers graduate players to the NFL every year, with players like Mike Vanderjagt and Marc Bulger.
The West Virginia Mountaineers play their home games at Mountaineer Field at Milan Pusker Stadium in Morgantown, West Virginia. The stadium holds 60,000, but attendance records have been set at over 70,000. See the Old Gold and Blue play in front of their adoring fans, and you can't help but root for the home team.
