2009 Michigan State Football Preview:
Head Coach: Mark Dantonio
The Michigan State Spartans head into the 2009 season with a lot of hope. MSU's basketball program just rode a strong postseason into the Championship Game of the Final Four, thus proving that anything is possible in sports. Now Spartans Head Coach Mark Dantonio must get his football team to play with the skill and passion necessary to overcome a tough Big 10 schedule. If Dantonio is successful, then fans in East Lansing might be making a New Year's Day trip to somewhere warm for another big game.

Football became a varsity sport at Michigan State University in 1896. The Spartan football program saw its heyday in the 1950's and ‘60s when it was known as “the football factory” under the coaching leadership of Biggie Munn and Duffy Daugherty. The team would win national titles in 1952, 1965, and 1966. Two games stand out in Spartans history. First the “Game of the Century” in 1966 between MSU and Notre Dame, where the teams would tie and share a national championship. Much later in 2006, the Spartans played their annual rivalry game against Northwestern. Michigan State would trail 38-3 in the 3rd quarter and go on to score 38 unanswered points to win the game 41-38, the largest comeback in NCAA history.
The Spartans play their home games at Spartan Stadium on Michigan State's campus in East Lansing, Michigan. Visitors to a Spartans game at MSU can take part in one of the largest tailgate parties in America. Entering the stadium, fans are awed by the 2005 stadium expansion, which includes “the Grand Entrance” of marble, glass walls, and high ceilings; an enormous luxury concourse; state of the art lounge; and 800 club seats.
