The University of Minnesota first began playing football in 1882. Their annual rivalry game with Wisconsin is the most played rivalry in NCAA history. The team moved back to campus for the first time since 1981 for the 2009 season when their new stadium, the TCF Bank Stadium, opened. The new stadium holds 50,300 fans. The Minnesota Golden Gophers previously played their home games at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which held 64,000 fans for Gopher games.
