The University of Minnesota first began playing football in 1882. Their annual rivalry game with Wisconsin is the most played rivalry in NCAA history. The Gophers would have a legitimate dynasty in the '30s when they won 3 straight national titles under Bernie Bierman. 2 more championships in the 1940's and their 7th in the 1960's would be the end of Minnesota's national title hopes. 2013 Minnesota Season Preview
As Jerry Kill enters his third season as the head coach of the Golden Gophers, and with a more experienced team, Minnesota is ready to take the leap into becoming more of a factor in the Big Ten. Sophomore Philip Nelson returns as the starting quarterback and Donnell Kirkwood is back after leading the Golden Gophers in rushing yards. Kill will need someone to step up at receiver, but the potential is there for the unit to become a factor in the offense. Nebraska, Penn State, and Wisconsin will travel to TCF Bank Stadium in 2013 for a Big Ten showdown. Kill is hoping to have year three success like he did at Northern Illinois University and Southern Illinois University. Both programs improved to 10-wins during Kill’s third season.
