Conference USA was formed in 1995 as a result of the merger of the Metro Conference and the Great Midwest Conference, both Division I conferences that did not sponsor football. During the 2005-2006 academic year, a radical shift in the institutional lineup of the conference brought together 12 schools, each of which sponsored football.
Since 1994, schools from Conference USA have made 41 Bowl appearances, and 25 NCAA appearances in men’s basketball. The conference touts a hefty athletics record, with 22 national championships in track and field and cross country. The conference has also brought home 17 NCAA men’s golf titles and 2 NCAA women’s golf titles.
