Marshall has been a consistent presence in bowl season since the start of the 1997 season. The Thundering Herd went to six bowl games in a seven year span in the late 90s that stretched into the 2000s. Overall, Marshall has played in over 10 bowl games, winning more than seven. Their recent streak of appearing in bowl games and winning has raised the expectations among the fan base that missing out on a bowl game is no longer acceptable.
Marshall has had many memorable bowl games in their history including their victory over the Maryland Terrapins in the 2013 Military Bowl by the score of 31-20. The win gave the Thundering Herd 10 wins on the season. Another memorable bowl victory occurred in the 2001 GMAC Bowl. Marshall scored 64 points in their win over the East Carolina Pirates. The Thundering Herd also finished the season with eleven victories and a top 25 ranking.

On December 27, 2013 Marshall squared off against the Maryland Terrapins in the Military Bowl as Marshall was trying to finish the season on a high note after a successful season. Average ticket price was $84, an increase over the $19 average price of the 2012 Military Bowl between San Jose State and Bowling Green.
