The Rice Owls football program began as part of the Southwest Conference (SWC) in 1919. Rice's early football history did exhibit success against the larger public institutions in the conference but the program was unable to keep up the pace with schools like the University of Texas, Texas A&M and others. Rice has recently seen a turnaround, however, going to the New Orleans Bowl in 2006, its first bowl game appearance since 1961. Score with TicketCity - the place to go for Rice Owls football tickets.
2014 Rice Season Preview
David Bailiff’s 6th season as Rice’s head football coach was one of the most successful seasons that the program has had in over a decade. The Owls won 10 games, and clinched their first conference title since 1994. Quarterback Taylor McHargue threw for over 2,200 yards and connected on 17 touchdown passes. He became the first quarterback in Rice’s history to lead the team to consecutive bowl games. The Rice Owls come into the 2014 season with someone not named McHargue at quarterback for the first time since 2010. Bailiff and company will turn the offensive reigns over to talented junior Driphus Jackson. Jackson will operate behind one of the most experienced offensive lines in C-USA and will have plenty of weapons at his disposal. Look for the Owls to be in contention for a 2nd straight Conference-USA title in 2014. Rice opens the season with two tough games, at Texas A&M, and at Notre Dame. Other exciting matchups on the Owls schedule are October 25th against North Texas and November 21st against UTEP.
