Address: 400 Graymont Avenue West, Birmingham, Alabama, 35204

The University of Alabama Birmingham Blazers football team plays their home games at Legion field in Birmingham, Alabama. Legion Field has been home to the Blazers since 1991, and can seat over 70,000 fans. The stadium has a long history that dates back to 1927, earning it the nicknames the “Football Capital of the South,” and the “Old Gray Lady.” Legion Field hosted the Iron Bowl between Alabama and Auburn from 1948-1988. The Stadium has also been home to the Dixie Bowl, All-American Bowl, various professional football teams, and is currently the home for the BBVA Compass Bowl each year. When the Blazers moved into the stadium in 1991 it already had a long history and tradition. But UAB has put their own stamp on Legion Field and it becomes more and more the home of the Blazers each season. The size of the stadium places it among the largest in C-USA, and it is consistently one of the loudest venues in the conference.

UAB Blazers Rivals

UAB vs. Memphis

Known as the Battle for the Bones, this matchup began in the Blazers inaugural season in the FBS Division in 1997, and has been played almost every year since. In reference to the importance of barbeque to both Birmingham and Memphis, the winner of the game is awarded a 100 pound bronze rack of ribs trophy. The Blazers currently lead the series that has become known for smash-mouth football. If you are looking for one Blazers game to attend each year, this is one of the best.

UAB vs. Southern Miss

The schools first met on the gridiron in 2000, and have played every year since. This series has been unbelievably close with 4 of the first 5 games being decided by 5 points or less, and over half of the games won by less than 10 points. Southern Miss currently leads the series, but the Blazers have owned the last half-decade. Few series have erupted onto the college football landscape with the competitiveness of this one, and it has quickly become one of the gems of the C-USA schedule.

What is the best UAB rivalry game during the season?

UAB has a number of great rivalries, but the shear competitiveness of the game with Southern Miss separates it from the rest. The first game in this series was a double overtime thriller that set the state for two decades of unbelievably close games. Seeing a game between the Blazers and Golden Eagles that is decided by more than 10 points has been a rarity, and the following behind the game has only continued to grow each and every year. With the Blazers in C-USA’s East Division and the Golden Eagles in the West, it is only a matter of time before this great rivalry takes place in the C-USA Championship game.

What is the best game day tradition at a Blazers home game?

Two Hours before kickoff at Legion field, the UAB football team arrives at the stadium and takes part in the Blazers Walk. As the players and coaches unload off of the bus, they are greeted with a tunnel of fans, students, the Marching Blazers, Golden Girls, and Cheerleaders. There is tons of energy in the air, and lots of Blazers pride. The band plays the Blazer Victory and Fight songs, and the fans and cheerleaders high five and cheer on their favorite Blazers players. This tradition is a great way to take a break from tailgating at Blazers Village, and some of the most fun you will have on game day at Legion Field.
