The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Blazers football program is one of the youngest and most exciting in all of college football. For a program that has existed for less than 20 years, to see them compete against some of the powerhouse football teams in the country, and win, is very exciting. Legion Field this season in Birmingham will be at full capacity as Blazers fans hope to see their team once again climb the ranks of the Conference USA and compete for another bowl game bid.

The UAB Blazers first fielded a football team in 1991 under head coach Jim Hilyer. In the team’s first 3 years Hilyer led them to an incredible 27-12-2 record. In 2000 under head coach Watson Brow, the Blazers managed to upset LSU in Baton Rouge in what is probably the greatest game in the school’s short football history. Neil Callaway took over the coaching position in 2007 and had his hands full immediately, posting the worst season so far for the Blazers. UAB has one major rival in the Memphis Tigers, whom they play each year in the “Battle for the Bones”. In spite of its youth, UAB has also managed to send a strong contingent of Blazers into the NFL.
The UAB Blazers play their home games at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. The historic stadium seats a capacity of more than 71,500 (down from its capacity of more than 83,000 before the removal of the upper deck in 2005). Opened in 1926, Legion Field provides a venue in which a sense of football history and tradition is hard for visitors to miss, giving the young UAB program the perfect backdrop in which to make history.
