UTEP Miners Football Season Preview History
2011 UTEP Football Preview:
UTEP got off to a fast start last season, but managed to win just one game down the stretch and finished at 6-7. With just 11 starters returning from last year's squad, it may be difficult for the Miners to build on last year, but head coach Mike Price has the football acumen to do just that.
The offense suffered the brunt of the losses, and will be returning just two players who started in 2010. Perhaps the biggest hole that UTEP needs to fill is at quarterback, and they will attempt to do so with junior college transfer Nick Lamaison, who enters the season with high expectations. As for the skill positions, Joe Banyard is expected to lead the way at running back.
The defense appears to be a little better off in terms of experience, and returns nine starters. The Miners will likely have to rely on their defense, and will turn to a strong defensive led by Marcus Bagley and Germard Reed. The Miners also have a talented secondary highlighted by cornerback Travaun Nixon, who is among the best in Conference USA.
2010 UTEP Football Preview:
The UTEP Miners football team has an outside shot at taking home the 2010 Conference USA West title, and fans are eager to have their preseason questions answered as the club prepares to make a run. In the past few seasons, the passionate play that the Miners show at times has dwindled toward the end of the year. In 2009, this tendency left the club with a 4-8 overall record.
As UTEP prepares for the 2010 campaign, head coach Mike Price will have to condition his athletes to play fierce football through the final game.
Senior quarterback Trevor Vittatoe, who was suspended during the Miners' spring games for breaking team rules, will be the difference maker this year. A positive attitude and better decision-making will help Vittatoe improve upon the 3,308 yards and 17 touchdowns he threw last season. In addition, running back Donald Buckram compiled a breakout season in '09, averaging 6.2 yards per carry and rushing for 18 scores. If the Miners are to seriously contend in the 2010 college football season, Buckram will need to prove that last year was no fluke.
The UTEP Miners begin their favorable 2010 schedule at home against Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
2009 UTEP Football Preview:
Head Coach: Mike Price
Things look promising in El Paso for the UTEP Miners heading into the 2009 college football season. UTEP head coach Mike Price has his team playing good football these past few years and Miner fans are starting to fill up the Sun Bowl. Expect another successful season from Price and UTEP this year as they look to surprise some teams and make waves on the national scene.
2008 UTEP Football Preview:
Head Coach: Mike Price
After a couple of tough seasons, the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Miners football team will look to improve in the Conference USA this coming season. Head coach Mike Price is in El Paso to stay and will look to repeat the quick success he brought to UTEP in just his first season in 2004, when he led the Miners to an 8-4 record. UTEP had won only six games in the previous three seasons combined. The Miners haven’t yet to managed to build on that success, but keep an eye out for this upstart program in El Paso as they look to climb the Conference USA standings and vie for just their third bowl bid ever.
