Duke Blue Devils Football Season Preview History

2011 Duke Football Preview:
Although Duke has one of the most storied basketball programs in the country, the same cannot be said for its football team. Last year's 4-8 record was not a deviation from the norm, but the norm itself. However, with some returning starters at key positions, this could be the year that they break through and reach a bowl game for the first time since 1995.

On offense, Duke will welcome back starting quarterback Sean Renfree, who showed he is more than capable of leading the way. Though more steady than flashy, Renfree will be helped a great deal by his talented surrounding cast, highlighted by running back Desmond Scott and wide receiver Conner Vernon. Both Vernon and Scott should be able to give the offense a much-needed spark.

Defensively, the Blue Devils will certainly be looking to shore up how it plays against the run. Duke ranked toward the bottom of the NCAA in that category in 2010, and did not fare much better in other facets as well. They will need safety Matt Daniels and linebacker Kelby Brown to step it up this year if they want to reach the postseason.

2010 Duke Football Preview:
Each offseason, followers of teams that are coming off a less-than-stellar year are prone to look for a rationale that the upcoming season will be different. Entering 2010, fans of the Duke Blue Devils football team have more than a few reasons to be optimistic.

The team has been in an extended slide since appearing in their last bowl game in 1994, but has improved measurably under head coach David Cutcliffe over the last two seasons. In fact, in 2009, Duke's 5-7 record was the closest the team came to bowl eligibility since 1994. As Cutcliffe tries to get the Blue Devils to compete atop the ACC's Coastal Division, he'll get a great deal of help from the team's top wide receiver, Donovan Varner. Last season, Varner led the ACC in receptions with 5.42 per game, overall receptions with 65 and yards per game with 87.2.

This year, Duke's first 1,000-yard receiver in more than 20 years looks to connect with quarterback Sean Renfree on his way to a second straight first-team all-conference selection. Notable games include Duke's season opener against Elon, the fight for the Tobacco Road rivalry against Wake Forest on September 11, and the final game of the year against North Carolina for the Victory Bell.

The Duke Blue Devils enter the 2009 season excited about their chances in the ACC Conference. Duke is coached by Head Coach David Cutcliffe and plays their home games at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham. Duke football is not as famous as the Duke basketball program run by Coach K, but they compete well in a tough conference. Duke went 4-8 in 2008, so there is room to improve heading into 2009.

The Duke Blue Devils football program is surrounded by uncertainty this season. After firing coach Ted Roof for going 1-11 in 2007, what is certain is that Duke will look to ring in a new era of football for the Blue Devils. The team’s one win over Northwestern in 2007 marked the end of a 22 game losing streak. For a school with such a legendary and successful basketball team, Duke will strive to put their football program back on the map this season. Wallace Wade Stadium will be teeming with Duke fans hoping to glimpse into what the future holds for Blue Devils football.
