East Carolina Pirates Football Season Preview History

2011 East Carolina Football Preview:
East Carolina has been a bit of an enigma in Conference USA over the last several years, earning big wins over Virginia Tech but falling to lesser conference rivals. However, with one of the most talented quarterbacks in the country, the Pirates may be on track to upset some bigger names and get back to a bowl in 2011.

The success of East Carolina lies on the shoulders of quarterback Dominique Davis. Last season, he set an impressive 15 school records and managed to amass 30.2 completions per game. Though he's definitely among the most talented players on the team, he won't be alone. A deep wide receiving corps will provide him with plenty of targets including Lance Lewis and Michael Bowman.

The offense likely won't have any problems putting up points, but the defense will have to improve over last year's squad, which gave up an unacceptable 44 points per game - which ranked second-to-last in the country. But the news is not all bad, as they have the parts to get better. Specifically, safety Bradley Jacobs and Emmanual Davis will lead a strong secondary, and nosetackle Michael Brooks is solid up the middle.

2010 East Carolina Football Preview:
The East Carolina Pirates have won a total of eight bowl games and five conferences championships, most recently capturing the Conference USA East title just last season. Finishing with a 7-1 record in the conference and a 9-5 record overall, the Pirates proved that they deserve to be regarded as one of their league's top competitors.

Entering the 2010 season, East Carolina will carry a lot of momentum from their recent success. Though they've lost their past two bowl games, the Pirates are coming off of back-to-back seasons in which they were the top team in Conference USA East.

Ushering in a new era for East Carolina football, new coach Ruffin McNeill will inherit a roster that lost more starters to graduation than any other college football team. McNeill, a former defensive back for the Pirates, will bring in a new offensive and defensive system, as well as a history of success. As a player for East Carolina, he helped the team capture the 1976 Southern Conference Championship and contributed to a 1978 Independence Bowl berth.

The Pirates kick off their season against Tulsa on September 5, and take on their storied rivals North Carolina State on October 16.
