2014 Illinois Season Preview

The Illinois Fighting Illini football team took a step in the right direction in 2013, the 2nd season under head coach Tim Beckman. Coming into 2014 the Fighting Illini’s future looks incredibly bright. The reason for this optimism can be put on the shoulders of redshirt sophomore quarterback Wes Lunt. Lunt has one of the highest upsides of any player to play quarterback in Champaign in over a decade. He will orchestrate an offense behind an experienced offensive line and with the help of junior running back Josh Ferguson. Look for Illinois to also have a tough defensive line, headlined by senior Austin Teitsma. The Big 10 is wide open in 2014 and the Fighting Illini have a good shot to end the season near the top of the West Division. Three games that will be key to the Illini’s chance at a bowl berth and the Big 10 West will be October 25th vs. Minnesota, November 15th vs. Iowa, and November 29th at Northwestern.

Illinois Fighting Illini Rivals

Illinois vs. Ohio State

These longtime Big 10 foes have met on the field over 95 times. The “Illibuck,” a carved wooden turtle trophy awarded to the winner, is the 2nd oldest trophy in the Big 10 and personifies the longevity of this series. Despite the Buckeyes dominance, this still remains one of the biggest games in the Midwest, providing many unbelievable moments and is always primed for an upset.

Illinois vs. Illinois State

When the Fighting Illini and the Redbirds meet on the field it can mean only one thing, Prairie State bragging rights. Because the two schools compete on different levels of Division 1 football, this game is not contested annually. Despite its infrequency, this rivalry retains all of the passion and energy of an intrastate feud and is a must see for football fans in the State of Illinois.

Illinois Fighting Illini in the BCS National Championship, Bowl Games and Big Ten Championship

If fifteen Big Ten Conference Championships doesn’t make you one of the most dominant teams in the league, then I’m not sure what will. The Illinois Fighting Illini have been tormenting members of the Big Ten since the start and have managed to pick up more than a dozen bowl game victories in the process. Ticketcity offers tickets to all college football bowl games and the Big Ten Conference Championship Game.
