Maryland has been a consistent bowl presence over the years which includes a national championship in 1953. The Terps went through a 12-year bowl drought in the 1990s, but since they snapped that streak in 2002, Maryland has not gone more than two seasons without appearing in a bowl game. The Terrapins have appeared in over 24 bowl games in their program history, winning more than 10. Due to their successful history and their recent success in the last decade, the expectations among the fan base has elevated to a level that missing a bowl game is no longer acceptable.
Maryland has had many memorable bowl games in their program history including their loss in the 2002 Orange Bowl against the Florida Gators. Even though the Terps lost the game, their appearance in the BCS game against powerhouse Florida marked the reemergence of the football program. Maryland went in a long drought of missing out in bowl season, and playing in the Orange Bowl showed that the football program was back. Another bowl moment for the Terps occurred in the 2004 Gator Bowl as they defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers 41-7 in front of nearly 80,000 fans.

On December 27, 2013 Maryland squared off against the Maryland Terrapins in the Military Bowl as Maryland was trying to finish the season on a high note after a successful season. Average ticket price was $84, an increase over the $19 average price of the 2012 Military Bowl between San Jose State and Bowling Green.
