WYOMING FOOTBALL SEASON PREVIEW
The University of Wyoming Cowboys were one of the biggest surprises of the 2011 season, and head coach Dave Christensen always seems to have his squad playing hard. The Cowboys finished with an 8-5 record and a 5-2 record in the Mountain West Conference, which gave them a berth in the New Mexico Bowl, where they fell to Temple University. With impressive wins over UNLV, San Diego State and New Mexico, the Cowboys showed that they are an up-and-coming program in the MWC, and may just have a bit more excitement in store for their fans during the 2012 season.
The Cowboys have reason for excitement heading into 2012, thanks to the stellar play of sophomore quarterback Brett Smith during last season. His 20 touchdowns and only 11 interceptions showcased the big play ability of Wyoming's offense and how they have minimized turnovers in big spots. On the ground, Brandon Miller is the No. 1 back, but will split carries with Kody Sutton and Tedder Easton. Robert Herron and Chris McNeill will return to start at receiver during 2012, but could receive a boost from newcomers like Dominic Rufran and Eric Nzeocha. The offensive line looks to be the only question mark entering the season, with Nick Carlson returning to play center, while there will be new starters all along the line.
On defense, the Cowboys will have great carryover from the 2011 season in all of their units. The secondary will return both cornerback starters, Marqueston Huff and Blair Burns, as well as starting free safety Luke Ruff. The linebacking corps will be led by Oliver Schober and J.J Quinlan, who are two hard-hitters in the middle. Finally, the defensive line should benefit from improved depth during 2012, as some players like Ben Durbin switched positions to defensive end to benefit the team overall.
In light of their improved record in 2011 and the addition of a handful of competitive programs to the Mountain West Conference, the Cowboys will have their work cut out for them during 2012. The team opens up against the Texas Longhorns in a major non-conference showdown, and will face crucial games against Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada later in the year. Though the early portion of the schedule looks tough, the Cowboys have more than enough talent on both sides of the ball to make a serious run at the MWC crown.

The Wyoming Cowboys first fielded a football team in 1893. Wyoming's chief rivals are Colorado State University, with whom the Cowboys play the annual Border War Game the winner of which receives the Bronze Boot Trophy, and Brigham Young University. Wyoming's defeat of UCLA in 2004 ended a 38 year bowl game drought. The Cowboys will use that victory as the inspiration upon which they'll build their future success.
