The Washington State Cougars first fielded a football team in 1893. The Cougars have made a claim to the 1915 national championship, which currently is awarded to Cornell University. The Cougars have historically been one of the least successful teams in the Pac-12, with only four Rose Bowl appearances. Washington State has had some success under coach William Dietz in the early 20^th century and under O.E. Hollingberry in the 1020's, '30s, and '40s. Washington State has rivalries with Idaho, Oregon, and most importantly Washington University. The annual game between Washington and Washington State is known as the Apple Cup, a series Washington leads 64 games to 30.

The Washington State Cougars play their home games at Martin Stadium in Pullman, Washington. The stadium was built to replace Rogers Field, the previous Cougars stadium made of wood and damaged by a fire in 1970. W azzu has a new coach with a big reputation, and that’s former gunslinger Mike Leach. The Cougars last won a conference title in 2002, and they hope Leach’s prolific offensive attack will translate into wins. Some of college football’s greats played at WSU over the years, including Drew Bledsoe, Jerome Harrison, Ryan Leaf and Marcus Trufant.

Nicknamed the Apple Cup, Wazzu plays a fierce rivalry game with Washington every season and they’ll host the matchup on Thanksgiving weekend in Pullman.
