The Washington State Cougars first fielded a football team in 1893. The Cougars have made a claim to the 1915 national championship, which currently is awarded to Cornell University. The Cougars have historically been one of the least successful teams in the Pac-12, with only four Rose Bowl appearances. Washington State has had some success under coach William Dietz in the early 20th century and under O.E. Hollingberry in the 1020's, '30s, and '40s. Washington State has rivalries with Idaho, Oregon, and most importantly Washington University. The annual game between Washington and Washington State is known as the Apple Cup, a series Washington leads 64 games to 30.
The Washington State Cougars play their home games at Martin Stadium in Pullman, Washington. The stadium was built to replace Rogers Field, the previous Cougars stadium made of wood and damaged by a fire in 1970. Visitors to Martin Field this year will be able to feel the anticipation among Cougars fans as they hope a new coach and a new era of football will hold more success for Washington State.
