Pittsburgh Panthers Football Season Preview History

2011 Pittsburgh Football Preview:
Pittsburgh has had one of the toughest off-seasons of any team in the Big East. Between a losing a coach, as well as three stars to the NFL, the Panthers left their fans with a lot of questions heading into 2011. However, they return a proven talent at quarterback, and first-year coach Todd Graham has shown he has was it takes to be a big-time play caller.

The Pittsburgh offense will certainly miss the contributions of Dion Lewis and Jonathan Baldwin, but with Tino Sunseri under center they have an experienced leader. He will be joined by running back Ray Graham who, despite having to sit behind Lewis, showed he was capable of carrying the load. As for targets for Sunseri, he will likely turn to junior receiver Mike Shanahan and sophomore Devin Street for deep threats.

The Panthers will have to make up for a few departed players on defense as well, but may find it more difficult to do so. Still, they will see the return of all-conference performer Brandon Lindsey, and an experienced linebacking corps led by Max Gruder and Tristan Roberts will provide some stability on defense.

2010 Pittsburgh Football Preview:
A hot start in 2009 had fans of the Pittsburgh Panthers dreaming of bowl game glory. While a tough close to their schedule ended their lofty goals, an impressive campaign nonetheless has fans and commentators building hype for Pitt's 2010 season.

Last year, Pitt seemed nearly untouchable in the Big East Conference to start the season, mounting strong victories over Navy, Notre Dame and Rutgers. The team peaked at a number nine ranking in the AP and BCS polls, and wound up finishing the season ranked 15th, with an overall 10-3 record. Even though a conference championship eluded the Panthers, many believe they gained the experience and personnel to be in the thick of a title run in 2010.

Dion Lewis, the Big East Offensive Player and Rookie of the Year, will be returning to lead to help lead Pitt into postseason play by filling the running back position. Last year he ran for a blistering 1,799 yards and scored 17 touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, Big East Defensive Player of the Year Greg Romeus will return as a defensive end for the Panthers, keeping opposing teams out of the endzone and opposing quarterbacks on the turf.

2009 Pittsburgh Football Preview:
Head Coach: Dave Wannstedt
2009 will mark the 5th season that Dave Wannstedt is Head Coach of the Pittsburgh Panthers. Pitt enters the season hoping to put behind them memories of an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Oregon State in the 2008 Sun Bowl. To help propel the Panthers the team has brought in new Offensive Coordinator Frank Cignetti Jr. If Wannstedt can get his new offense going then Pittsburgh should be a top contender for the Big East Conference crown.

2008 Pittsburgh Football Preview:
Head Coach: Dave Wannstedt
The University of Pittsburgh Panthers are one of the most successful college football programs of all time. With coach Dave Wannstedt coming off a recent contract extension, in spite of some tough losing seasons, Pitt is riding high after upsetting their heavily favored and #2 ranked rival West Virginia in the 2007 Backyard Brawl. The Panthers will look to expand on that bright spot in their recent history and bring the team back to prominence in the Big East. Look for Pittsburgh to be in the hunt for a bowl bid this coming season.
