The Southeastern Conference (SEC) is likely the biggest college football conference in the nation in terms of sheer member clout. Football legends including Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant of Alabama and running back Herschel Walker of Georgia are alumni of the conference. The conference, founded in 1933, celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2008, extending its rich history of college sports tradition. Of the 13 founding charter schools, 10 of these schools remain today.
In the 2006-2007 season, Florida clenched the SEC’s first national championship. The SEC is the only conference guaranteed a national network appearance each week through its contract with CBS sports. Also, for 26 straight seasons, the SEC has recorded the largest football fan attendance for a conference, totaling more than 6.5 million fans per season and filling 96.5 percent of its stadiums on average. The teams of the SEC are some of the most viewed in the nation, and are teeming with tradition.
