The Tennessee Vols first formed a football program in 1891. Under coach Robert Neyland, the team would play for 4 national titles, winning 3 of them. The Tennessee Vols were successful during the years that followed their 1951 national championship season, but it wouldn’t be until coach Fulmer took over with quarterback Peyton Manning under center that the Tennessee Volunteers would find their way back to the top. Manning would take over the position after the first and second string Qbs were both injured. As a four-year starter, Manning came close but didn’t quite manage to win the Tennessee Volunteers a title. He did however set the stage for the team to win a championship in 1998 with quarterback Tee Martin, going 13-0 and winning the first BCS Title game ever. The list of talented Tennessee Volunteers football players who’ve made a mark in the NFL includes Reggie White, Doug Atkins, and Peyton Manning.
The SEC provides Tennessee with plenty of rivalries. At the top of this list is the bitter competition against Alabama every year. Other rivals include Florida, Georgia, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky. The Vols play their home games at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee, which has a capacity of over 102,000, making it the largest stadium in the South. Watching a game at Neyland against Alabama Crimson Tide in a sea of orange and white might be the quintessential college football experience.
