Vanderbilt began playing football in 1890, and saw a good deal of early success, including two national championships and 11 conference championships in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Vanderbilt was at the height of its success when it helped found the SEC. Unfortunately the Commodores would never win another conference title, and would begin a steady decline that, other than a few highlights in the 1970's and '80s, would continue through to today.
