Southern Methodist University is a premiere private school located in University Park, near downtown Dallas, Texas. The student body and alumni are very supportive of the Mustangs athletic program and have great pride in the football team that plays in the American Athletic Conference. The Mustangs football program has experienced varying levels of success over time that have included undefeated seasons, winless seasons, and just about everything in-between. Whether SMU is celebrating a high or suffering through a low point, fans always come to Gerald J. Ford Stadium to cheer on their Mustangs.
SMU’s greatest accomplishment came in 1935 when they won the national championship despite losing the Rose Bowl due to the Dickinson System. Other highlights for the program include playing in consecutive Cotton Bowls in 1947-1948, Doak Walker winning the Heisman Trophy in 1949, and making bowl games in 4 out of 5 years from 1980-1984 and making four consecutive bowl games from 2009-2012.
Although most of SMU’s recent bowl games have been played at distant location, some fans have still traveled to see the Mustangs. SMU has missed out on playing a bowl game the past couple years but fans are hopeful that the new head coach, Chad Morris, is the man to aid the program in its recovery and take the Mustangs bowling in the near future.
