TULANE FOOTBALL SEASON PREVIEW
The University of Tulane has grown by leaps and bounds over the past several years to send a handful of players to the NFL, but the Green Wave has a lot of work to do to improve upon 2011. Tulane finished with a 2-11 record (1-7 in Conference-USA) and head coach Curtis Johnson believes his team can contend in the rankings if they get back to basics. While the team experienced a few growing pains during the past year, they are one year older and wiser and ready to contend for their first Conference-USA title.
Offensively, the Green Wave will benefit from the continuity of another year of the team's playmakers working with one another. Quarterback Ryan Griffin, running back Orleans Darkwa, receiver Wilson Van Hooser and tight end Matt Marfisi round out a talented group of skill position players that have another year of familiarity with one another. Having said that, Tulane may encounter a bit of trouble along the offensive line, as the team is only returning two starters. How this group gels with one another will play a significant role in whether or not the Green Wave has the chops to enforce their will on opposing defenses in 2012.
On defense, the heart and soul of the linebacking corps, Trent Mackey, will return to the middle of the Green Wave's alignment and will pair with Darryl Farley and Dominique Robertson to form a fearsome trio of defensive playmakers. On the defensive line, the Green Wave will need to see a lot out of incoming nose tackle Kenny Welcome, who will have to be a force against the running game. In the secondary, cornerback Jordan Baptiste earned a starting spot with his stellar play over the past several months, and he will join a veteran group, including fellow corner Alex Lauricella and safeties Shakiel Smith and Devon Walker. Lastly, the Green Wave specialists remain unchanged from 2011, with Cairo Santos handling the kicking duties while Jonathan Ginsburgh pins the team's opponents deep in the punting game.
For the University of Tulane to succeed in 2012 they will need a fast start. This may be a tall order with early games against the University of Rutgers, Tulsa and Old Miss, which should let fans know just how competitive the Green Wave will be for the Conference-USA title. One year older and wiser, the Green Wave are out to prove that they are far better than their 2011 record indicates.

Tulane's rich football history begins in 1893. They started strong with undefeated seasons in 1900, 1925, 1929, and 1931. Tulane's success took a downturn after this and arguably didn't rebound until Tommy Bowden took over as coach in 1997. Bowden led the Green Wave to its first undefeated season since 1931 with the help of quarterback Shaun King. After Bowden left for Clemson, Tulane has suffered for the most part. The Green Wave looks for renewed success this year.
The Tulane Green Wave play their home games at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Superdome has now become a symbol of the devastation of Katrina, but also provides Tulane fans with professional class facility in which to see a game.
