Faurot Field is an outdoor stadium used primarily by the Missouri Tigers football team on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia, Missouri. The stadium is commonly known as Memorial Stadium and the field is named after legendary Missouri coach Don Faurot. Faurot Field is also affectionately known as the “Zou”. Visitors to Faurot Field are generally impressed by the noise of the Missouri crowd and the way the school has gently updated their home stadium keeping its character but adding the modern amenities one expects for a top class football program.
Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium was opened in 1926 with a capacity of just 25,000. The stadium was designed with expansion in mind, however, and now boasts seating for over 68,000 and has seen crowds of more than 75,000 on a few occasions. Faurot Field is distinctive for its large white ‘M” made of whitewashed rocks behind the north end zone. Missouri’s opponents have in the past rearranged the letters to an “N” for Nebraska or “K” for Kansas as a prank, but Tiger students always managed to get the stones back in their proper places before game time.
Faurot Field has provided the Missouri Tigers with an excellent home field advantage, most likely because of the raucousness of the crowd. The team has managed to go 6-0 as recently as 2003, and the “Zou” provides visiting teams with a tough challenge.
