With a unique fusion of rock and reggae, 311 have certainly proven themselves as one of the more popular alternative bands of the last several decades. Buoyed by a loyal fanbase and a sound unlike most other bands, the quintet from Nebraska will be around for many years to come.

311 got their start by independently releasing their own albums in the late '80s and early '90s. While they were not as successful as their later work, the songs on records such as "Unity" and "Damnit!" laid the groundwork for what would be their breakthrough several years later.

After releasing their independent records, 311 dropped their first major record in 1993. Despite the mild popularity of the song "Do You Right," it would still be a few years until they hit it big. That breakthrough finally came in 1995 with the release of their self titled third record. Known by most fans as The Blue Album, the record featured some of their most well-known tracks including "All Mixed Up" and "Down." Powered by those two singles, the album reached the 12 spot on the Billboard 200 charts and was certified triple platinum.

Fresh off the success of their self-titled album, 311 hit it big again with their 1997 release Transistor. The record included a collection of popular songs such as "Transistor" and "Beautiful Disaster," and set the stage for a strong end to the decade. 311 continued to grow its fanbase with the 1999 album Soundsystem, which is perhaps best known for the radio hit "Come Original."

As they moved into the new decade, 311 did not slow down. The band's 2005 album Don't Tread On Me was big hit, and debuted at number five on the charts, with its title track among 311's most iconic songs.

In 2011, 311 kept things going with the release of their 10th album, Universal Pulse. Once again, the record made its way into the top 10 on the Billboard charts, and the single "Sunset In July," performed well, too.

Though their sound has softened quite a bit since their early days, 311 still has a distinct style that is instantly recognizable. Though they have been making music together for more than 20 years, chances are 311 will be around for quite some time.
