Supergroups sometimes have the reputation of being unimpressive assemblies of random musicians that never quite seem to gel. Such is not the case with A Perfect Circle, however, which has brought together some of the most talented musicians from alternative rock to form a unique sound unlike any other band.
A Perfect Circle is fronted by guitarist Billy Howerdel and Tool lead singer Maynard James Keenan. Former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha and Nine Inch Nails drummer Josh Freese also make up the band, which was first formed in 1999 and released their first album, Mer de Norms, in 2000.
Powered by the big names in its lineup, Mar de Norms had an impressive debut. It peaked on the Billboard 200 charts at number four, and was home to a trio of popular tracks including "The Hollow," "Judith" and "3 Libras," all of which were hits among the alternative rock crowd. The record also earned significant critical praise, setting the tone for the rest of the band's career.
Despite the popularity of their first album, A Perfect Circle would not release a new record for three years due, in large part, to conflicting schedules. However, the wait was well worth it when they released Thirteenth Step in 2003. Much like its predecessor, the album was a hit and stayed on the charts for an impressive 78 weeks thanks to singles such as "Weak and Powerless," and "The Outsider."
After the release of their third album eMotive on Election Day in 2004, the band went on an indefinite hiatus. Many of the members were involved in several other side projects, and the absence left many people wondering whether or not they'd ever see a new A Perfect Circle album ever again.
Those fears were quelled a bit in 2010 when Keenan hinted that the band would release new material at sometime in the near future. He was true to his word, and the band began making the rounds on late night talk shows later that year, and several months later announced a 2011 North American tour.
Although it's been years since A Perfect Circle released a new album, they are still wowing fans across the globe with regular performances of their best tunes.
