The core of what would become the band Bon Iver started back in a high school in Wisconsin where Justin Vernon and Michael Noyce first met. Vernon would take a detour through North Carolina and the band DeYarmond Edison before returning to a wintery Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Recovering from illness in a cabin, he was inspired by the words "bon hiver," which is French for "good winter." He changed the band name to better reflect the English pronunciation of the phrase.
At the cabin Vernon wrote and recorded much of what would become the band's first album, For Emma, Forever Ago. Vernon never intended for the material to make it to a full album, but the warm reception he received when he sent out the demos helped changed his mind. The music received some positive press from influential Internet sources in the months that followed, introducing the band to a wider audience. Those audiences responded equally positively at live shows.
For Emma, Forever Ago arrived in 2008 to high critical praise. The album made a number of "best of" lists, both of the year and the decade. Tracks from the album were showcased in film and on television. Bon Iver would go on to collaborate with Kanye West on track for his album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
Vernon worked on the follow-up to For Emma, Forever Ago in nearby Fall Creek, Wisconsin. The self-titled album has a different, more mixed sound, aided by a number of guest artists that contributed. Bon Iver entered at #2 on the Billboard 200 charts on the first week of release in July 2011. The album topped the US Alternative, Indie, and Rock charts as well as charting internationally in six more countries. Like its predecessor, it also received nearly universal acclaim from critics.
Bon Iver may be celebrated for songwriting, but the band doesn't stay in the studio.
