Cake rose to fame in the late 1990s with a unique style that served as a divergence from the boy band-heavy pop music scene. With a string of hits over the next decade, the Sacramento, California-based band has been a mainstay in the world of alternative music.
Cake was formed in 1991 by frontman John McCrea and guitarist Greg Brown. The band did not waste any time releasing their first single, "Rock 'n Roll Lifestyle," which hit airwaves in 1992. The tune was a moderate success on the modern rock charts, so they decided to release their first full-length album, Motorcade of Generosity, in 1994. While it included their relatively popular first single, the album was not that well received by critics, and Cake would have to wait for its big break.
Their second album, Fashion Nugget, proved to be the break they were waiting for. The album ended up being certified platinum. Anchored by "The Distance," which would peak at number four on the modern rock charts, and their idiosyncratic cover of "I Will Survive," the album earned significant positive reviews from critics and peaked at number 36 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Despite the success of Fashion Nugget, founding member Greg Brown left the band soon after, but Cake's next album, 1998's Prolonging the Magic, was just as popular as their previous endeavor. The release featured what is widely considered to be their most popular single, "Never There," which captured the top spot on the modern rock charts for three weeks. Prolonging the Magic went on to sell more than one million copies on its way to platinum certification.
It would be three years before Cake released their next album, Comfort Eagle, in 2001. Although it was produced nine years ago, the albums biggest hit, "Short Skirt/Long Jacket," is still popular today. It is used as the theme song for the TV show Chuck, and enjoyed a resurgence when it was featured in an Apple iPod commercial in 2010.
After the somewhat disappointing performance of their next album, 2004's Pressure Chief
, Cake has not produced any new studio releases in quite some time. However, early in 2010 the band announced that their sixth studio album, Showroom of Compassion
, is expected to be released in January of 2011, ending a seven year drought of new songs from the once-prolific band.
