Citizen Cope, also known as Clarence Greenwood, is both a band and a one-man act that has been a fixture on the music scene for years and has grown into one of the most popular acts on tour today. Greenwood got his start as a DJ in Washington, D.C., in the late '90s and contributed to a variety of hip-hop and soul albums as he was getting started. In 1993, he hooked up with Maryland-based rapper Basehead to improve his profile and carried that into his first album, Cope Citizen, in 1992. Over the years, Greenwood would shift between recording artist, DJ and contributor as he tried to achieve mainstream success. After signing with Dreamworks in 2000, Citizen Cope released its first self-titled album two years later but ended up being a commercial flop. However, it wasn't until Greenwood bought himself out of his Dreamworks deal, paired with Arista/RCA and eventually started his own label that he was finally able to emerge into the public consciousness.
In 2004, Citizen Cope released The Clarence Greenwood Recordings, which received immediate attention with the track, "Son's Gonna Rise." While the album wasn't a huge success in the sales column, Citizen Cope had found the airplay necessary to build upon their success and would follow up the success of that record with Every Waking Moment in 2006. This album proved to be a breakthrough moment for Citizen Cope, as it would climb to No. 69 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and would receive critical acclaim from all corners of the music industry.
In 2010, Clarence Greenwood would break away from the large record labels and branch out on his own to found Rainwater Recordings. Later that year, Citizen Cope would release its fourth album, The Rainwater LP. The single "Healing Hands" became a regular on pop, rock and alternative stations and would open up a world of new opportunities for the group.
After paying his dues with larger record labels and setting off on his own to start his own, Citizen Cope dropped their fifth studio album in the summer of 2012 and it has proven to be the band's biggest hit yet. One Lovely Day debuted at No. 39 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and features a mellower, laid-back style that could appeal to a wider demographic of listeners. Greenwood's epic journey through the music business shows just how hard that road can be and how a bit of personal initiative can carry you to great heights.
