Led by the powerful voice of Florence Welch, Florence and the Machine has emerged as one of the most unique and impressive acts in pop music. Often mixing a slew of different instruments and background music, Welch has cemented her place as among the best singers around today, and in a few short years her innovative music has made her a household name.
Though a band by definition, the group is based around Welch, whose voice is what drives each track forward. However, Florence and the Machine also includes a number of talented musicians backing her up. Perhaps most famously is Isabella Summers, who has collaborated extensively with Welch in the past. Welch and the group formed in 2007, and after toiling in obscurity for several years, Florence and the Machine released their debut album, Lungs, in 2009.
Lungs was an immediate hit thanks to a number of haunting tracks including "My Boy Builds Coffins," "Kiss With a Fist," and "Cosmic Love." The album gained popularity in the United Kingdom, but it was not until 2010 that it became a success across the pond. Its popularity in the United States can be almost directly linked to the anthemic "Dog Days Are Over," which climbed the Billboard charts after being re-released nearly two years after it originally came out. Throughout the summer of 2010, the song enjoyed considerable radio play and as a sign of its crossover success, was covered on the hit Fox show, Glee.
In addition to earning the acceptance of fans across the musical spectrum, Florence and the Machine have also become critical favorites. Thanks to the success of Lungs, Welch and the band were nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys, and the album received praise from numerous venerable publications from Rolling Stone to Spin to The Guardian, earning comparisons to such famous acts as Regina Spektor and the Eurythmics' Annie Lennox.
Thanks to the success of their debut, Florence and the Machine have performed everywhere from the MTV Video Music Awards to Saturday Night Live and thrilled audiences across the globe. And given Welch's impressive chops as well as the band's broad appeal, it's safe to say that Florence and the Machine will be around for years to come.
