FOSTER THE PEOPLE FACTS:
Members: Mark Foster, Mark Pontius, Cubbie Fink
Genre: Indie Pop, Indie Rock
Formed: Los Angeles, California
Albums: Torches (2011)
Hits: "Pumped Up Kicks"
Other: The band's name came from repeated misunderstanding of the name "Foster & the People".
Mark Foster didn't originally want to call his band "Foster the People". Foster, Mark Pontius, and Cubbie Fink started out as "Foster & the People", but repeatedly found fans and friends had problems including that all-important ampersand when saying the band's name. Eventually the name, and its positive vibe, stuck.
Formed in 2009, the band's rise to fame is one of the examples of the leveling playing field in the music business the Internet creates. Their first big hit, "Pumped Up Kicks" first went viral on the web, transitioned to satellite radio, then more traditional terrestrial radio airplay followed. It would eventually reach the top of Billboard's Alternative Songs chart and #3 on the Hot 100. "Pumped Up Kicks" was the first alternative cross over to enter the top 5 of the Hot 100 since "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon.
A self-titled EP followed as "Pumped Up Kicks" popularity grew, and then their debut album, Torches, arrived in May of 2011. The album received positive reviews and strong sales, attaining Gold certification before the end of the year. It topped the US Rock and US Alternative Album charts as well as peaking at #8 on the Billboard 200.
Foster the People has augmented their web presence with big festival gigs at Coachella and South by Southwest. They've appeared on a number of late night talk shows and performed on Saturday Night Live. Their growing success lead to the use of their songs in an number of commercials, television shows, and video games.
Foster the People may use the Internet to their advantage, but that's not the only place you can find them. Live shows are an important part of this energetic indie pop trio's success. Don't miss them when they come to a venue near you.
Foster the People 1 1
Foster the People: Best New Talent When i first listened to Foster the People's new album "Torches" on itunes - i immediately fell in love with their electronic/alternative style. Not only are the lyrics deep and meaningful, the melody of each and every song is unique and interesting. For first time listeners I recommend "Pumped Up Kicks" and "Helena Beat" - but everyone I have spoken to or introduced the album to, has become a big Foster the People fan, liking each and every track! It's so hard these days to find new, unique music with our charts being bombarded with Pop and Rap from idolised artists. Its nice to know that those bands going against the norm can make it big time and "save my soul" from such ordinary music. Torches is the most played album on my ipod - up there with the classic rock hits by the Police, Pink Floyd and the Beatles. All their concerts have sold out in Sydney where I live - i was almost heart broken when i heard such news. As I am moving to Vancouver in a matter of weeks, Im on the look out for any of their concerts in BC or even America - thats how much of a fan I am! Have officially fallen in love with this album and can't wait for the next instalment. Go out and buy the album now - i guarantee you'll absolutely love it! July 25, 2011
