It's a rare feat in the music industry for a band to find a way to transform their reputation as counter-culture heroes into superstars into respected veterans, but that's exactly what the Red Hot Chili Peppers have done since the 1980s. Decade after decade, the band has reinvented its sound from the brash and highly sexualized lyrics of the '80s to the smooth and compelling rhythms that make up their most recent albums.
The band's original members - singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, drummer Jack Irons and guitarist Hillel Slovak - started playing together in high school and were initially dubbed Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem, before changing their name to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band's lineup changed sporadically over the course of the late 1980s, but by 1991, the group exploded onto the music scene.
BloodSugarSexMagik was the album that put the Red Hot Chili Peppers on the map and propelled them to stardom. The album went quadruple-platinum, scored them a headlining spot at Lollapalooza in 1992 and gave the band two big singles in "Under the Bridge" and "Give it Away." The record highlighted the band's energetic stage presence and thunderous sound, which made them the perfect alternative to the rather glum alternative scene of the early '90s.
The Chili Peppers 1995 album, One Hot Minute, didn't receive the critical success of other albums, but still offered a few fan favorites like "My Friends" and "Aeroplane." Perhaps RHCP's most successful album came in 1999 with Californication. Singles like "Scar Tissue" and "Other Side" dominated the airwaves and debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart.
The band followed up the success of Californication with 2002's By the Way. This album featured popular tracks like "By the Way" and "Dosed." The record showed the musical growth of the band with guitarist John Frusciante experimenting with multi-layered guitar tracking and airy harmonics.
Most recently, the Red Hot Chili Peppers released an ambitious double album that surged to the top of the Billboard charts and won Grammys for Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song for "Dani California" and Best Rock Performance By a Duo Or Group.
Decades after they first got together, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have proven that a band can stay relevant in the ever-changing music world, and they certainly have legions of fans to prove it.

What more could you ask for? Usually other bands have either a really good singer, or a really good guitarist or drummer, usually not at the same time. But RHCP has an amazing drummer (Chad Smith), a really good guitarist (John Frusciante), a versatile singer (Anthony Keidis) and arguably one of the best bassists of all time (Flea). Frusciante isn’t in the band anymore, however I’m still amazed at how talented each of the band mates are. September 9, 2010
